Position the crown in the instrument over the abutment, press on firmly with the left index finger and whn satisfied that the crown is on the tooth, release the instrument. With this method you will never "drop" the crown.
REMOVAL:
There are two methods of removal: 1. Position the grippers on the crown to be removed by applying downward pressure with the left index finger at the beaks; lock the instrument on and then transfer your left index finger from the top to underneath the instrument using your finger as a fulcrum to lever the crown up and off. The force should be applied vertically with no wiggling.
2. The instrument is positioned and locked as before but for extra force, instead of using the leverage technique the crown is removed by tapping on the underside of the CPR with a surgical mallet.
Doctors have advised us that with slippery porcelain crowns, the grip can be improved by applying pumice to both sides of the crown.

You will find and it will take a little practice, that it is easier to operate the locking ratchet by NOT placing your thumb through the handle but instead placing it along the top of the handle (see illustration). In this way, it is easier to press with your thumb to release the locking mechanism.
